Basim Alamri, Ph.D.


Founder of the AWC

He is an associate professor in the English Language Institute at KAU.

He works currently as the director of the scientific publications center at KAU. He is a genre analyst and corpus linguist. His research interests revolve around topics related to L2 academic writing and publishing, including genre studies and corpus linguistics, English for academic and specific purposes, discourse analysis, and technology in the classroom.

Dr. Miriam Alkubaidi


Director of the AWC

She is an associate professor in the English Language Institute at KAU. She worked in a variety of English language centers including Berlitz Language Centre in Jeddah, Center of English Studies in Dublin, Ireland. In 2007, she started working in the ELI in King Abdulaziz University. She completed her Masters in Macquarie University, Sydney Australia in Applied Linguistics (TESOL), and completed her PhD in Trinity College, Dublin Ireland in the area of second language writing. In 2018, she was certified from Harvard University in "Teaching and Learning in Higher Education'', and worked in the curriculum and testing unit in ELI. Dr Miriam also worked in the Education Curriculum Center where she supervised the Exit Exam in KAU. She is now the vice director for academic programs within the Education Curriculum Center.

Mr. Yahya Alghamdi


Deputy Director of the AWC

Language Instructor and a certified tutor in the English Language Institute. He is the deputy director and a supervisor of the Public Relations and Technical Support Unit at the AWC. He got his master’s degree in Curriculum and Instructions & Literacy Development with a specialization in TESOL. He is interested in research topics related to cognitive psycholinguistics, instructed second language acquisition, and English academic writing skills. Thikra Alzahrani


Assistant Director

She is an English language instructor and a certified teacher trainer at the ELI-KAU. She holds an MA in TESOL from Arkansas Tech University, USA with 4/4 GPA, and a BA in English from the Department of European Languages and Literature. Her research interests include translanguaging attitudes and practices, and topics related to the role of L1 in learning a second language.

Dr Suha Alansari


Head

Dr. Suha Alansari is the head of the Training and Development Unit at AWC. She received her BA in English Language and an MA in English Literature from Umm Al-Qura University. She was awarded a PhD in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching from The University of Warwick in the United Kingdom in 2019. Dr. Alansari’s research interests include Critical Discourse analysis, Gender, Identity and Multimodality. She is a published scholar who has presented her research locally and internationally. She is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals in TESOL.

Mr Kamal Shawahneh


Supervisor

Language Instructor and a certified tutor in the English Language Institute and a supervisor of the Training and Development Unit at the AWC. He is interested in translation and interpretation. He has been teaching English as a second/foreign language, and for specific purposes. He worked in different countries and taught learners from different backgrounds and of different ages in both public and private institutions. His main concern at work is to help learners and institutions improve, develop, gain achievements, creativity, and excellence.

Dr. Hanadi Abdulrahman Khadawardi


Head of Consultation Unit

Dr. Hanadi Khadawardi is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and the head of the Academic Consultation Unit in the AWC. She was awarded a PhD in Modern Languages/Applied Linguistics from University of Southampton, UK in 2016. She was awarded an MA with Distinction in Applied Linguistics and Research Methodology from University of Southampton, UK, in 2011. Hanadi has got a CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults) from Teaching House at OHC, London, UK. Her research interests include second language acquisition, learning and teaching English language, digital literacies, academic reading and writing strategies, language learning skills, the use of modern technologies and AI for language learning and teaching, pedagogical issues, instructional and curriculum design, and scientific research skills. Mr Ridwaan Levy


Supervisor of Consultation Unit

Language instructor and a certified tutor in the English Language Institute. He is a supervisor of the Academic Consultations Unit at the AWC. He has taught English at all levels at different educational institutions for twenty-three years. He holds a Master’s Degree in English Literature and a Tesol Certificate. He has taught IGCSE and SAT preparation at International Schools in Saudi Arabia, as well as Business and Professional English for management training at the American Language Institute in Jeddah. His interests include English for academic and specific purposes, and Professional Writing.

Dr. Nisrin Hariri


Head of Research Support and Development Unit

Dr. Nisrin is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics in the English Language Institute. She received her BA in English Language and Literature from the KAU Department of European Languages and Literature. She was awarded an MA in English Language Teaching from the University of Warwick, UK and an MSc in Total Quality Management and Business Excellence from Sheffield Hallam University, UK. She went on to study and research at the University of Leicester, UK, where she was awarded a PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2018. Dr. Hariri’s research interests include Pragmatics, Linguistic Politeness and Computer-Mediated Communication.

Dr. Khaled Khader Oraby


Supervisor of Research Support and Development

Lecturer of English for Academic Purposes in the English Language Institute and a supervisor of the Research Support and Development Unit at the AWC. He is a Cambridge Certified Teacher Trainer. He has worked as a lecturer of English language and linguistics for over 20 years at universities in Saudi Arabia and Jordan. He got a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Huddersfield, UK with a minor in sociopragmatics. His research interests span around discourse analysis, phonosemantics, sociopragmatics, TEFL, educational technology, and Arabic linguistics. Dr. Shams Bukhari


Head of Public Relations and Technical Support Unit

She is an assistant professor in the English Language Institute at KAU. She received her BA in European Languages/ English Literature from King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She was awarded an MA in TESOL from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Education from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Dr. Shams is the supervisor of the External and the Distance Learning Programs. Dr. Shams’s research interests include bilingualism, Using L1 in EFL classrooms, teaching methods and students’ and teachers’ attitudes towards L1 use when learning English.
